“The Flash” Casts Its First Female Speedster

Trajectory
Trajectory

Soap star Allison Paige has been cast as Eliza Harmon, a.k.s. “Trajectory,” and will make her debut in an episode later this year.

Trajectory was the name of a short-lived heroine introduced during the “52” crossover event a few years ago.  A lifelong fan of the Flash, Harmon volunteered for Lex Luthor’s “Everyman” project and received the gift of super-speed with the hope of one day becoming the new Kid Flash. Her story was cut tragically short when Luthor intentionally removed her powers during a battle with the supervillain Blockbuster.

The television version of Trajectory will give the Flash plenty of difficulty when she arrives in Central City and creates super-powered chaos — chaos that is blamed on the Flash.

Paige’s version of Trajectory will make her television debut on the CW in Episode 16 of season 2 of The Flash.

Netflix Orders Second Season of Jessica Jones

Break out the bourbon and the sarcastic wit, Netflix just ordered up a second helping of Jessica Jones.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Netflix confirmed the news during its the Television Critics Association’s press tour sessions on Sunday.

Although details are scarce, it was confirmed that the show was renewed for a full 13 episodes, and that showrunner Melissa Rosenberg will still be firmly in the driver’s seat. No release date was announced.

Rosenberg did tell reporters, “I think I just want to continue with her character. She’s a very damaged character and her damage goes beyond Kilgrave [David Tennant]. There’s a lot to mine from in her backstory and in her present day situation. I think we’ll find something.”

In other exciting news, Netflix also mentioned that more Marvel spin-offs might be on the way.

When asked about spinning off characters from the streaming company’s current crop of Marvel titles into stand-alone shows, Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos told reporters Sunday that “any character that’s in there is on the table … It’s always possible. All the characters in the universe could also spin out.”

Top on my list would be a show for Patsy Walker, a.k.a. Hellcat, but we are also going to get a look at the Punisher and Elektra in the upcoming second season of Daredevil. Anyone else out there that we’re not thinking of?

Agent Carter Season 2 Has a Connection to Dr. Strange

Season two of ABC’s Agent Carter sees Peggy (Hayley Atwell) and her right-hand man Jarvis (James D’Arcy) head to Los Angeles to investigate the mysterious Isodyne Energy. Investigating Isodyne puts the super-spy in direct conflict with the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of longtime Iron Man villain Madam Masque played by Wynn Everett.

In a recent interview with CBR, Agent Carter showrunner Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, explained that Isodyne Energy will allow them to tie the show both to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming movie Dr. Strange.

From the CBR interview:

When asked if Isodyne Energy is connected to the Darkforce, Fazekas answered affirmatively. “Basically, Isodyne is a company that we invented based in part on real life companies like Radiodyne or General Atomic or the beginnings of the Jet Propulsion Lab — all of which were in L.A. in the ’40s, and were developing the space program and were developing nukes,” explained Fazekas. “That’s what Isodyne is, and what you’ll learn is they were involved in the nuclear testing out in the desert when they were testing the, at the time they were calling it the atom bomb — and one of these tests didn’t go as expected. You’ll learn more about that in Season 2, but they stumble upon what people in the Marvel Universe will know as Darkforce, but because they’ve never seen it before they just name it Zero Matter. That’s our tie-in to the ‘Doctor Strange’ universe, and also to ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ because you’ve seen it in ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ as well.”

Agent Carter returns with a two-hour premiere on Tuesday, January 19, at 9 pm ET/PT on ABC.

Off Hollywood: Christie Marx (Creator of Jem and the Holograms)

Jem and the  Holograms was one of the first science fiction and action cartoons ever created for girls. The cartoon was a joint production between Hasbro, Marvel and Sunbow Productions — the same team that had created the popular G.I. Joe and Transformers cartoons. The show was created by Christy Marx, a writer who had worked on both G.I. Joe and Transformers, based on a new doll line that Hasbro had developed.

Jem was the no. 1 Nielsen rated syndicated cartoon series in November 1986. It was the third most watched children’s program in syndication with 2.5 million viewers weekly in 1987. The cartooon was syndicated in multiple countries including Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, United States, Italy and France.

Hasbro got into a nasty sales war with Mattel, who had introduced a similar doll like “Barbie and the Rockers.” Sales for both lines suffered badly as a result, leading Hasbro to discontinue the toy line. The cartoon lasted an additional season before Hasbro pulled the plug in it as well.

Jem became a cult classic for women that grew up in the 1980s, leading Hasbro to develop a live-action movie without Marx’s input. Underfunded, the film was forced to jettison all of the science fiction and action elements that made the cartoon popular and the movie was a financial and critical flop — reviled by both fans and the general public.

Webzine The Front recently interviewed Marx about creating the creation of the show.

The Front presents Off Hollywood.

In the premiere episode of Off Hollywood, we meet Christy Marx, writer and co-creator of Jem and The Holograms, a new-wave cartoon featuring an iconic head of pink hair and a braininess that transcends glamour ‘n’ glitter, fashion ‘n’ fame.

ABC Confirms Pilot Order for Marvel’s Most Wanted

Well we have confirmation of what we already knew: Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood are shooting a pilot for Marvel’s Most Wanted, a spin-off of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Palicki reprises her role as Barbara “Bobbi” Morse, aka Mockingbird, and Blood in once again Lance Hunter.

Although the fact that a pilot had been ordered was widely reported back in August of 2015, ABC had maintained the shroud of secrecy typical of all Marvel projects at the network — refusing to confirm or deny that the pilot was indeed being shot.

But according to an article on Deadline, ABC President confirmed that the pilot is on its way at a Television Critics Association panel today.

“We are making it in the next few months,” Lee said. “It’s a really good script.”

If ordered from pilot, Marvel’s Most Wanted will join the already established Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter as they continue to flesh out their corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Television Critics Nominate Krysten Ritter as “Best Actress in a Drama Series” for Jessica Jones

Krysten Ritter received a lot of critical acclaim for her portrayal of Jessica Jones, a damaged private investigator with superpowers in Marvel’s atmospheric neo-noir crime series of the same name. A promotional campaign for the predicted that we would “know her name,” and it looks like critics are remembering both Ritter’s name and her haunting performance as awards season starts.

Ritter was nominated for “Best Actress in a Drama Series”  by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. The awards will be given out at the 21st Annual Critics Choice Awards.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones Final Trailer Released

Jessica Jones is looking more and more like a worthy successor to the critically acclaimed Daredevil.  Netflix released the final trailer for the series on November 10th, and it gives us the best look yet at Hell’s Kitchen’s damaged protector.

Jessica is working as a private detective, attempting to hide her special abilities and to forget her past as a failed superhero.

From the trailer, we can see many of the elements from the comic have made their way to the show. Jessica is trying to drink away the pain of months of torture and abuse at the hands of mind-controller Killgrave, “The Purple Man.” She frequents a bar owned by Luke Cage, another super-powered street-level hero and a potential love interest.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones is available exclusively on Netflix. All episodes will be released on November 20th, 2015.
