Russo Bros. Vote “Hell, Yeah!” on ‘Black Widow’ Solo Movie

Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo are doing the press circuit to promote the upcoming film. At a recent press conference in China, they were asked what they thought about a Black Widow solo movie.

“Hell yeah! We love that character,” said Joe Russo.

“And we love Scarlett,” Anthony added, referring to Scarlett Johannson.

“We find that [Black Widow] is one of (if not the) richest character in the Marvel universe,” continued Joe Russo. “A very complex character, haunted by demons and her understanding of the world is fascinating. I think there is a lot that can be done with that character.”

The Russo Bros. themselves are likely too busy. After the success of Captain America: Winter Soldier, Marvel gave them the keys to their biggest franchise with Avengers:Infinity War, parts I and II. But their voices carry considerable weight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point. Hopefully, that will be enough for Marvel to find a space for Black Widow on a very busy schedule of upcoming superhero movies.

Cate Blanchett Confirmed as “Baddie” for Thor: Ragnarok

Cate Blanchet has been accidentally outed as the bad buy in the upcoming third installment of the Thor franchise, Thor: Ragnarok. Blanchett had long been rumored to be attached to the film, but no details had emerged as to what part she might play. Entertainment Tonight caught up with her costar Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner, a.k.a. the Hulk, in the film at the BAFTA Awards Season Tea Party on Saturday with the news that she may be close to signing on to the film.

“I’m so thrilled. I saw her at the Governors’ banquet here and heard that maybe she was circling, they were talking to her about the part, so I ran up to her and I was like, ‘Please, please, please make this work!'” he revealed.

“She’s just one of the best, and to have her play a baddie is going to be really exciting,” Ruffalo added.

So, thanks to Ruffalo, we now know that Blanchett is going to play a “baddie.” Two characters from the Thor comics come immediately to mind that Blanchett would be great for. The first is the less likely, Amora, otherwise known as “The Enchantress” an Asgardian sorceress and seductress who is one of Thor’s oldest and greatest enemies.

The second and more likely villain Blanchett might play is Hela, daughter of Loki, goddess of death and the underworld in Norse mythology and another of Thor’s greatest antagonists. Since the title of the movie is “Ragnarok,” the battle that ends the world in Norse mythology, its a pretty good bet that death will be involved.

Of course, we have our own favored character that we hope Blanchett is playing — but it’s a pretty big longshot. Still, we are allowed to dream, right?

From a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live:

“I heard you were going to be in the new Thor movie,” Kimmel said. “Is that true?”

“Yes, Chris Hemsworth is busy, so I’ve been working out,” she joked.

“Is that confirmation, or are you dodging the question?” Kimmel continued.

“No, I’m not dodging the question!” she claimed. “They’re just substituting one Australian for another. Gender equality! Why can’t you have a female Thor?”

A Hero’s Going to Die When Captain Marvel Takes on Iron Man in “Civil War II”

In their Marvel recently had one of their top-secret editorial retreats, where writers and editors plot out the upcoming fate of the Marvel Universe. Past retreats have developed the “Age of Ultron,” “Civil War” and “Winter Soldier” storylines — all of which were later adapted into Marvel movies.

While the meetings are normally completely off-limits to anyone not writing or editing a Marvel comics, this year a reporter for the Daily News was invited to observe the event. This year, the major story-arc being discussed was the upcoming “Civil War II,” a sequel to 2007’s blockbuster comics storyline that pitted hero against hero, in a parable of civil liberties vs. national security.

“You want it to be The Godfather, Part II,’but for every Godfather II, there’s a Godfather III,” Marvel publisher Dan Buckley tells The Daily News reporter.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis and editor-in-chief Axel Alonso outline the premise.

“A mysterious new Marvel character comes to the attention of the world, one who has the power to calculate the outcome of future events with a high degree of accuracy,” according to the synopsis. “This predictive power divides the Marvel heroes on how best to capitalize on this aggregated information, with Captain Marvel leading the charge to profile future crimes and attacks before they occur, and Iron Man adopting the position that the punishment cannot come before the crime.”

As the story unfolds the new oracle predicts that Marvel hero will be the cause of a major incident of destruction in three days, forcing the other heroes to make a tough decision. Bendis just hasn’t figured out how bad the destruction will be.

“It has to fall somewhere between Hitler and self-defense,” he says.

Bendis consistently refereed to the doomed hero as “Peter Parker,” but Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott isn’t worried, “By the end of afternoon, it won’t be Peter Parker,” he predicts.

Other candidates are suggested and dismissed. The Human Torch is rejected because he burns people to death and “that’s so horrible to illustrate.”

Writer James Robinson suggests, “What if the pressure causes (the hero) to commit suicide?” as a way to tackle the issue of cyber-bullying, before editor Tom Brevoort shoots that idea down. “I don;t think you’d want a Marvel super hero committing suicide,” he comments.

Bendis and Alonso actually have a “Eureka moment” during a break and share with the room a great idea for a hero to be sacrificed and an even more shocking hero to murder him or her.

The idea got a standing ovation from the other writers and editors, who immediately begin suggesting ways to tweak and enhance the story. The “next big thing” in the Marvel is on its way.

“It’s a black magic alchemy of putting the right people in the room,” says Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada. “Those of us who work here are creative trust fund babies, because we have inherited an incredible chest full of toys that we get to play with. It does end up being like a bunch of kids in a room throwing s— against the wall.”

ABC Confirms Pilot Order for Marvel’s Most Wanted

Well we have confirmation of what we already knew: Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood are shooting a pilot for Marvel’s Most Wanted, a spin-off of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Palicki reprises her role as Barbara “Bobbi” Morse, aka Mockingbird, and Blood in once again Lance Hunter.

Although the fact that a pilot had been ordered was widely reported back in August of 2015, ABC had maintained the shroud of secrecy typical of all Marvel projects at the network — refusing to confirm or deny that the pilot was indeed being shot.

But according to an article on Deadline, ABC President confirmed that the pilot is on its way at a Television Critics Association panel today.

“We are making it in the next few months,” Lee said. “It’s a really good script.”

If ordered from pilot, Marvel’s Most Wanted will join the already established Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter as they continue to flesh out their corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
