Wonder Woman and Whataburger Tangle Over Logos and Trademarks
The first Whataburger opened in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950. As a Northern California resident, I’ve never eaten at one, but evidently there are more than 700 location sprinkled across the United States — mainly in the south.
Whataburger’s logo looks like this:
Warner Bros. recently filed for a trademark on the new logo Wonder Woman is sporting in the DC Extended Universe movies, which looks like this:
Whataburger is not a fan of the new Wonder Woman logo, which they feel is too close to the logo they have held since 1950, and according to Bleeding Cool, they are rattling sabers in an attempt to get Warner Bros. to back off.
There is some irony here, because the movie logo is clearly a variation on the iconic Wonder Woman logo that the Amazon has held since the character was reworked after the classic 1980s mini-series, Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Until that point, Wonder Woman’s costume had featured an eagle on her chest, a holdover from her World War II patriotic roots.
DC wanted to get rid of the eagle for two important reasons:
- As portrayed, the eagle was clearly a U.S. symbol, and it made little sense for a mythical Greek society; and
- You can’t trademark an eagle.
Point #2 was likely the more pressing issue for DC. They has trademarked Superman’s”S” shield and Batman’s bat symbol, but Wonder Woman had nothing equivalent that could be trademarked and slapped on clothing, notebooks, coffee mugs, etc.
DC’s president and editor-in-chief at the time, Jenette Kahn, turned to famed graphic designer Milton Glaser, who had also designed the new DC logo, the famous “I ❤ NY” logo, and many others. Glaser’s studio came up with a distinct logo that invoked the letters of Wonder Woman’s name, rather than eagle imagery.
This logo, or slight variations has served as Wonder Woman’s symbol for the past 30 years — and DC could trademark it. They even gave an “in story” explanation as to why Wonder Woman suddenly had new threads.
That brings us back to the Whataburger case. If anything, the logo created in the 1980s looks even more like the Whataburger logo than the new movie logo does. I have no idea why Whataburger never complained about it in the 30 years since its creation. And since they never did, I think they are going to have a hard time convincing a judge that consumers are going to get confused between a fast food restaurant and a warrior princess of the Amazons.

Margot Robbie to Produce Harley Quinn Standalone Film
Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, the stand-out star from this summer’s Suicide Squad, is getting her own solo movie in a deal announced just yesterday.
Margot Robbie’s terrifyingly beautiful rendition of Quinn will be making its way to the big screen in a standalone movie, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Robbie is “signing a first-look deal with the studio behind her summer hit Suicide Squad to develop and produce feature films through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner.” She will also be the executive producer of the film.
The twenty-six year-old Aussie actress has been championing the Harley solo film since before Suicide Squad made its summer release. “I’m trying to make it happen,” Robbie said in an interview with Tipsy Talk, “there’s just so much more to do.”
If it were up to Robbie, she’d play the Clown Queen of Crime forever.
“There’s so much you can do,” she told ComicBook.com, “They’re the sort of characters that you could keep exploring and find so many more, so much more to do.”
Here’s to hoping that the film will fare better than the critically mauled Suicide Squad — which director David Ayer reportedly only had six weeks to rewrite after Warner Bros. made various large cuts to his first go at the film.
While the DC Extended Universe has fared poorly from with the critics, it has been making money for Warner Bros., and the female heroes have been bright spots in otherwise poorly reviewed films. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was considered by many to be the best thing in Batman vs. Superman, and director Patty Jenkins. is finishing up post production on the Amazonian princess’s solo movie right now.
Wonder Woman will be the first female-led superhero movie set in the modern DC or Marvel universes, but she won’t be alone for long. Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson will be Marvel Studio’s first female led superhero film, and now Harley Quinn is joining the fun.
The buzz on all of these movies is good so far, But female superhero fans are crossing their fingers. After high-profile failures such as Catwoman and Elektra 20 years ago, Hollywood gave up on female-led superhero movies for two decades. If Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel are anything short of spectacular, we might not see another female superhero film for a generation.
Luckily, these kick-butt ladies — powered by female writers, actors and directors — are more than up to the task

Supergirl meets Miss Martian, Superman and more this fall
If you’ve been keeping up with television news recently, chances are you’ve been hearing about all of the buzz surrounding Supergirl. The series, which returns for its second season on Monday, Oct. 10, continues to make headlines as it settles into its new home at The CW.
With many anticipated guest appearances like Superman, played by Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin, and a crossover musical with the Flash, 2016 is shaping up to be the year of Kara Danvers.
According to ComicBook.com, the summer press tour for the Television Critics Association’s CW panel announced that Miss Martian, played by Sharon Leal, will join Martian Manhunter in the series’ sophomore season. There have been no statements made about whether or not she will be a series regular.
Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg also spoke at the Television Critics Association summer press tour at the Supergirl panel and revealed that the mysterious pod that crash-landed on earth belonged to Mon-El, who will be played by Containment’s Chris Wood.
Supergirl joins The CW’s impressive lineup of DC shows, including Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash. For those that didn’t keep up with the series in its first season on CBS, don’t fret. Netflix is set to stream the season starting Saturday, Sept. 10.
The CW is also airing two episodes of the show’s first season every Monday night from 8 to 10 p.m. The reruns started on Aug. 1 and will end on Oct. 3, according to an article on International Business Times.
Dust off that red cape, Supergirl fans. With a lineup like this ahead of her, Kara is in for an exciting, entertaining debut season on her new network.

The first time we met the family behind ESJ Cosplay, they were at WonderCon showing off a wonderful Laura Kinney a.k.a. “X-23” a.k.a. “Wolverine” cosplay that grabbed our attention immediately. Two years later, we were teaming up with them (and other families) to create our DC Super Hero Girls group at WonderCon 2016.

‘Lumberjanes’ Movie Adds Director Emily Carmichael
Indie filmmaker Emily Carmichael has been added to the live-action adaptation of BOOM Studios Lumberjanes according to The Wrap.
Lumberjanes is a comic book series created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooke A. Allen and Noelle Stevenson. The series is set at ‘Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types’ and follows the exploits of the Lumberjane scouts of the Roanoke cabin — Jo, April, Molly, Mal and Ripley as they battle supernatural forces.
20th Century Fox optioned the comic for a live-action movie in May of 2015. And now rising indie filmmaker Emily Carmichael has been announced as the director. Carmichael was most recently floated as a possible director for Marvel’s upcoming Captain Marvel big screen adaptation. She made a name for herself directing award-winning shorts including 2011’s The Hunter and the Swan Discuss Their Meeting and 2013’s RPG OKC.
