Secret identity of a father raising two super-heroic young girls

New ‘Marvel’s Runaways’ Trailer Has Powers and ‘Old Lace’

We loved Hulu’s first Runaways trailer, but like the recent trailer for The New Mutants movie, we were left wondering, “Are there superpowers in this superhero show?”

The second trailer gives us a definitive, “Yes.”

We see Molly (a.k.a. Princess Powerful) crushing a metal seat with her hand. Chase Stein is wearing his trademark x-ray specs (the “fistigons also make an appearance – but worn by his evil father Victor). Karolina Dean appears in her beautiful “rainbow” form. Nico Minoru has her hands on the “Staff of One” and damn it looks cool when it glows, and we even get a glimpse of Gertrude’s genetically modified telepathic dinosaur from the future, “Old Lace.”

I loved the comic Runaways, and I am hoping this show will live up to its predecessor.

Hulu is launching the first season of Marvel’s Runaways on Tuesday, November 21.

Gender Defying Halloween PSA Gives Us All the Feels

The PSA tells children (and their parents) that it is OK to dress as anyone you want for Halloween, but the twist at the end has social media buzzing.

The two-minute PSA is simply titled “My Heroes.” It shows a family celebrating Halloween together. They buy costumes for their little boy and girl: Batman and Wonder Woman; carve Jack-o-Lanterns and excitedly speculate about the candy they will get.

Although they are having a good time, obvious expressions of concern and worry show on the parents faces when the kids aren’t looking. After a night of trick or treating, both kids are in candy-and-television induced comas. The mom and dad each grab a kid and tuck them into bed.

It is only as the camera pulls away that we realize that after they put on their costumes, we never saw the kids’ faces. It was the boy who was Wonder Woman, and the girl had chosen Batman.

The video ends as the dad looks back on his sleeping children and whispers, “My heroes,” before turning off the lights.

This 2-minute digital PSA was written by Alexander Day and Brian Carufe, directed by Almog Avidan Antonir, and produced by the team at Landwirth Legacy Productions, as means to challenge gender stereotypes when it comes to children’s Halloween costumes

Landwirth Legacy Productions aims to create entertaining and educational visual content and stories that seek to enrich, empower, and inspire audiences. Compassion is at the root of every project and relationship that Landwirth Legacy cultivates.

‘Logan’ Director James Mangold Working on ‘X-23’ Spinoff

Last year’s Logan was a bittersweet success for writer/director James Mangold. While it was by far the biggest commercial and critical success for the Wolverine franchise, it also marked the final appearance of Hugh Jackman as the adamantium-laced mutant. But on a recent publicity junket to drum up Oscar buzz for the critically acclaimed movie, Mangold revealed he was already working on a spinoff movie featuring Logan’s young protege Laura Kinney, a.k.a “X-23.”

Mangold had been toying with ideas for an X-23 film since the end of filming on Logan, but he said studio resistance to the idea of a Laura-led sequel evaporated this summer for one simple reason:Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman.

“Patty’s success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist,” Mangold told The Hollywood Reporter. “The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”

Mangold is working on the script with Thor: Ragnarok screenwriter Craig Kyle, the man who created Laura for the X-Men: Evolution cartoon way back in 2003.

X-Men franchise producer Hutch Parker agreed that there is more story to tell with Laura. “Yes, there are other facets of that character and some others potentially to explore in their own way,” says Parker. “It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan, but I think part of what has been opened up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe.”

Dafne Keen and Hugh Jackman at the MTV Movie Awards

While it is unknown if the sequel would pick up where Logan left off, or move forward in time to feature an adult Laura, Daphne Keen, the breakout star who played Laura in the film, is on record as wanting to explore the character more. “She is an emotional bomb. She’s complicated — she tries to be so strong but she feels so kind of vulnerable at the same time. I really love her. I’d love to keep playing her,” she said.

It is also unclear whether Laura would remain “X-23” or become the new “Wolverine” in the proposed sequel, but Logan star Hugh Jackman is ready to pass the torch. The veteran actor recalled that he was not even supposed to play the part of Wolverine. It was awarded to Scottish actor Dougray Scott initially — but fate intervened when shooting on Scott’s film Mission Impossible 2 went long, forcing X-Men producers to give Jackman a shot at the role.

“I met him early on and I said to him, ‘Man, I am sorry.’ And he said, ‘It’s just business, but you have just gotten one of the greatest roles out there, so go crush it,’ ” Jackman said. “I just remember being so impressed by that and his class, and hopefully I am a big enough guy that when someone else takes over, I will do exactly what was done to me…and I feel glad to just be a part of the legacy of that character. I feel great parts — great characters out live the actors that play them. Bond, Superman, Batman…so, there you go.”

So he’s made peace with leaving the role of Wolverine behind. Would he be interested in producing the way he did for Wolverine: Origins?

“No, I won’t be a producer on a Laura sequel,” he says. “But I will be lining up on the Thursday night at 10 p.m. to watch it though.

She is just phenomenal.”

Kevin Smith Will Donate Residuals for All Weinstein Company Films to Charity

Proceeds from hits Clerks, Chasing Amy and others will be used to fund ‘Women In Film.’

In a dramatic response to the Harvey Weinstein sex-abuse scandal, writer/director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) will donate all future residuals from films he made with the disgraced producer to Women In Film, an advocacy group with the stated mission to “achieve gender parity in the film, television, and digital industries.”

Smith made the announcement during the October 13th edition of his podcast, Hollywood Babble-On, chokin up with emotion as he spoke.

My entire career is tied up with this man. It’s been a weird fucking week. I just wanted to make some fucking movies, that’s it. That’s why I came, that’s why I made Clerks. No fucking movie is worth all this. Like, my entire career, fuck it, take it. It’s wrapped up in something really fucking horrible. I’m not looking for sympathy. I know it’s not my fault, but I didn’t fucking help.

I sat out there talking about this man like he was a hero, like he was my friend, like he was my father and shit like that.I was singing praises of somebody that I didn’t f‑‑‑ing know. I didn’t know the man that they keep talking about in the press. Clearly he exists. But that man never showed himself to me.

Weinstein and Smith had a decades-long working relationship — starting with Smith’s feature debut, Clerks, which was picked up for distribution by the Weinstein-led Miramax, and which also included Mall RatsDogmaJay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

Smith mentioned that Weinstein had recently approached him about making a sequel to the cult film Dogma, which deconstructed Christianity — particularly Roman Catholicism. Smith said he declined because he did not want to face the uproar that making a film about such a controversial topic would entail.

This follows up on Smith’s initial twitter statement, “He financed the first 14 years of my career — and now I know while I was profiting, others were in terrible pain. It makes me feel ashamed.”

A spokeswoman for Women In Film confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that donating the residuals was Smith’s idea, and that they were currently working out the logistics.

“It’s historically much harder, of course, for a woman to get a film made than a man,” Smith noted. Concerned that the scandal will damage the profitability of the fims he made with Weinstein, he also pledged to give $2,000 a month to the organization “from now until the fucking day I die.”

“And hopefully that just goes to people that get to make shit without having to deal with some fucking animal saying, ‘Here’s the price,’ ” he said.

Final Trailer for ‘Stranger Things 2’ Turns It up to Eleven

The last trailer for Stranger Things Season 2 has arrived, and it features the triumphant return of superpowered girl hero, Eleven.

The new season shows the gang from season one reunite to combat a new menace from the Upside Down– giant tentacled shadow monsters that threaten to tear apart the entire town. Will, still recovering from his time in the Upside Down, appears to be the only person who can see the monsters. But after the events of last season, no one is doubting his visions this time.

“These are not nightmares,” David Harbour’s Hopper says. “It’s happening. And it all leads back to here.”

Stranger Things Season 2 debuts on Netflix on October 27th.

First ‘New Mutants’ Trailer Is Ready to Terrify You

The first trailer for Fox’s X-Men spin-off The New Mutants dropped at midnight last night, and it looks like we are getting our first true horror-themed superhero film.

Starring rising stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) and Blu Hunt (The Originals)The New Mutants appears to be taking its cues from the incredibly influential and deeply disturbing “Demon Bear” storyline from the original series.

The New Mutants comic was Marvel’s first try (of many) at capitalizing on the popularity of the X-Men franchise with a new title. After the original X-Men went missing, Professor X assembled a new team of young mutants and began training them. And the team stuck together even after the original X-Men returned.

The Demon Bear – Bill Sienkiewicz

While the book started as traditional superhero fare, and ended by being transformed into the testosterone-soaked, guns-and-swords, very ’90s X-Force, in between there was a period when artist Bill Sienkiewicz joined writer Chris Claremont and they pushed the envelope of superhero comics into unexplored areas — particularly horror.

Their first story together — The Demon Bear Saga — explores what happens when a supernatural entity from her past stalks Native American team member Danielle Moonstar (Mirage) eventually pulling the entire team into a mystical realm known as “The Badlands” where they must fight the demonic creature for their very souls.
